55 Hours in Iceland: A Winter Wonderland Escape

I visited during Thanksgiving about 5 years ago, and I’ve recently prepared a few custom itineraries for a corporate travel incentives program, and aside from a cosmetic update of The Blue Lagoon, turning the property into more of an elevated retreat – nothing has really changed about the beauty Iceland has to offer. The experience was a magical winter wonderland, with stunning landscapes, and a sense of tranquility. Regardless of when you visit, Iceland is captivating and has timeless allure.

Day 1: Arrival and Blue Lagoon

Afternoon:

Touching down in Iceland, first stop is brunch at the Northern Lights Inn, then straight to the Blue Lagoon. Northern Lights Inn offers a round trip complimentary shuttle. Reserve tickets to The Blue Lagoon ahead of the visit, because there’s timed entry and it is usually packed.

Evening:

Back at the Inn, Lagosteen, which can only be described as a delightful cross between baby lobster and shrimp, perfectly paired with a glass of Sauvignon Blanc.

Day 2: Golden Circle Tour

Morning:

Set off at the crack of dawn for The Golden Circle Tour, a full-day voyage through Iceland’s natural wonders. Watching the golden glow from over the horizon is a great way start to the day.

Afternoon:

The tour goes beyond the city – seeing geysers, a massive frozen waterfall, and lava fields. A cozy lunch at a rustic cabin rest stop before continuing is included.

Evening:

Some of the tour goes on to see the Icelandic horses, but if the wellness spa package is added, it will visits to hot springs off the beaten path, away from the tourist experience of the The Blue Lagoon. End the evening at the Inn for dinner.

Day 3: Farewell and Icelandic Horses

Morning:

The Inn provides a brown bag lunch, so another excursion can be squeezed in, to meet the Icelandic horses before the return flight. These horses are not like American Mustangs, they look like a cross between a very chic donkey and a tiny camel minus the humps.
